4. Varnashrama Dharma literally means duty (Dharma) according to one's ability (Varna) and stage in life (ashrama). This means an individual's Varna depends on that person's abilites/nature/talents etc. (not birth which is a common misconception). The Bhagavad Gita says that the 4 Varnas are divided on the basis of Guna (nature/talents) and Karma (what an individual does with their talents i.e.: deeds/actions) By only concentrating on the jobs/karma that one is good at, according to their own abilities, that person ultimately benefits greater society (division of labour) through self service and is one way to reach Moksha. Be careful, the Hindu concept of Varna according to the scriptures has no concept of hierarchy and nor is it based on one's birth, family, reincarnation etc. Varna should not be confused with Jaati which does have hierarchy, is based on birth and is NOT a Hindu concept.
