SQL Server 2000 comes in various editions. Some require a real server OS, the non-production editions should work just fine in XP.

Yes installing MS Sql Server 2000 is possible under windows XP.

You might want to install the Personal Edition. The developer and enterprise editions are technically the same. However keep in mind the the Windows XP OS itself limits users to a number of connections (I believe its 10).

Hence the Personal Edition will end up to be equivalent to installing an enterprise edition on your win XP machine.

The installation procedure is very easy and self documenting. There is nothing special about installing this server on your XP. It's as easy as installing your favourite messenger. Just follow the wizard steps.

If you see Service manager's icon in the task bar with green triangle, then all ok.
Try to connect to server. Type

isql

in the command prompt.

If you do not see green triangle, but the red one,
select in the service manager local server ("." - dot) and press start button.

See, you are able to deploy sq. on it, however the concern would be u cant instal server on it. you need to deploy laptop version for it. it is going to instal some dependcy record then you certainly would be waiting to instal it.
