Core moral values are important in most professions. As a citizen of my community, I need to be aware of how my actions impact others. In my work, it is almost more important - I teach medical students a course on ethics.

One value my mother taught me was to treat others how you would like to be treated.

I always treat others with respect and dignity ... until they disrepect me, then my attitude changes toward them. She also taught me to forgive but never forget ;)

In my job I care for people with intellectual disabilities and how staff treat them determines very much on their ongoing safety health and wellbeing. However, in the past I have seen some staff mentally, verbally and physically abuse these very people we are entrusted to care for. I have taken these staff to the side and discussed with them ... both mentally, verbally and physically ... what I think of their practises and what I will do to ensure it will never happen again.

I believe my values and work ethics have been instrumental in helping me to successfully achieve a managment position within my organisation. Now i'm in a position to ensure the integrity of our staff's work practise, to treat our clients with the proper care they deserve across our organisation.
