I was about to watch the movie, Desperado, but do I need to watch El Mariachi first to understand everything in Desperado? Thanks!

I don't think you need to but it was Robert Rodriguez's ticket to Hollywood. It was entertaining, had characters you could like/dislike and was relatively inexpensive to make. Turn on the Director's audio track and be fascinated as he describes some of the tricks he used to make a movie with great production value to cash spent ratio.

No, I don't think so. I had never heard of "El Mariachi" when I saw "Desperado" for the first time, and I enjoyed it immensely. I think watching "El Mariachi" adds to the appreciation of "Desperado," but the film stands up well on its own.

It does kind of help to watch the first one, but it's not necessary. You can understand what happened in the first one just by watching the second. And good choice in a movie, by the way.

Not really, they cover it in condensed version at the beginning of the movie.
