First, they are toothless. They have no real power and the US for one rejects them when they want and use them when they are on the same side of an issue.
The major flaw however is the UN secruity council. The 5 members of the Secruity Council were determined mainly from the outcome of WW II. They wield tremendous power in the UN and can veto an resolution regardless of how much general support it has. But mainly, the Council represents the world the way it was back in 1946 at the end of WWII and not the way the world is now in 2007. The Council either needs to include more nations to insure representation equally around the globe, or the UN will lose any credibililty as a truly diplomatic force.

The main problem is that the security council is based on a post World War 2 and the veto weilding members havent been changed to include the new powers of the world. That and they get nothing done.

The UN has only one problem: the US.
All that yank whining and wanking about "corruption in the Iraq oil for food" scandal? IT WAS US OIL BRIBING PEOPLE, but that fact gets glossed over, and the UN gets the blame.
The UN promotes abortion in China? No, the US has CAUSED more abortion with its neanderthalic policies. By killing off condoms and sex ed for China, MORE Chinese are going to have abortions because of the "one child policy".
The US opposes sex ed and HPV inoculations for Africa, condemning thousands of women to painful disease and cancers because sex ed and medicines "promote premarital sex".
Etc. etc. etc.
John Bolton is about 70 inches tall. If he lost the top ten inches of his _head_, it wouldn't make a bit of difference.
