There are security monitoring companies, such as ADT, which will install detection systems (typically, the base system will be free or very cheap), then will charge a moderate monthly fee to monitor. In the event of a break-in (or fire or medical emergency) they will notify the proper authorities to respond. However, before using one of these systems, it would be wise to talk to your local police department to find out about any potential problems.

Garage Door/put a bolt thru track just above the wheels to prevent door from being forced open.
Use motion sensor lights to illuminate around your house.
Clear any shrubs away or trim them so they will not give concealment to someone trying to get into a window.
Install a dead bolt lock on all doors including any sliding patio doors.
To prevent windows from being open, install additional locks.
Do not leave any ladders out at night.
Keep sides and back of house lit up all night is feasible.
Bottom line is make it difficult for someone to get in.
Alarm systems are ok if they are properly monitored and do not trip off accidently.
