2006 was the hottest year ever on the Earth. Is that directly because of global warming is the real question. We can have a whole debate in regards to that and its causes but theres SOMETHING that is causing the Earth to warm. I am a knowledgeable weather/climatology buff for YEARS, and only recently have read enough to start make me question global warming. There's also a belief that the Earth goes in cycles. Perhaps years from now we may talking about a global cooling. I am not turning this into a global warming debate. However, we have to be having SOME effects on the Earths climate conditions. But the warmest year on Record for the globe was 2006.

All of the 14 hottest years have occured since 1987 and the hottest are 2006, 2005, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2001. If this year continues as it's started then 2007 will become the hottest year on record.

Quite worrying when you consider the records go back to 1880 (some records go back much further). More info about this can be found here... http://homepages.wmich.edu/~karowe/UCS%20global%20warming%20fact%20sheet%20January%202006.pdf

As to what's contributed to it... In two words - Global Warming.

GW is a fiercely debated topic amongst those who believe it and those who don't. To date there have been nearly 1000 reports into GW and every one confirms it's for real. Amongst the scientific community there is no doubt that GW is happening and has been for thousands of years.

The Earth goes through cycles of warmer and cooler and it seems to be well balanced until recently when a huge spike in temperature occurred. It is relevant to consider this a graphic warning sign. We must also consider the warming, especially in the north where the ice pack is melting away leaving Polar Bears to grow skinny and to drown because that can't find an ice sheet to support them to rest and to hunt. Polar Bears do their hunting from the ice. It is also warming at the south pole but the warming is less dramatic around the ocean edges. There is reported decrease in the Penguin population. This warming seems to be somewhat offset be a gradual cooling close to the centre of the the Antarctica.

Inuit of the north in Canada have no words for what has been revealed by the warming. They need to change the areas to hunt in because of the thin ice. They have also seen bumble bees for they first time ever. They don't like the bees.
