There are 3 options:-
1. As mentioned by you use a card reader
You can buy a Card reader from www.ebay.in, Insert the
memory card into the card reader and transfer the data. If you
are using Windows XP you need not install any drivers.
Drivers are auto detected.

2. Using a data cable.
You need to Install the PC suite application that comes along
with the Cell Phones. For some Nokia handsets (eg 6230i)

3. Using a Blue-tooth Dongle.
You can again buy a Blue-tooth Dongle from www.ebay.in and
connect it to your PC. You need to install the bundled
Software, and follow the guidelines. Its very simple.

I recommend you use the 3rd option, as you can use it not only for mobile phones but also for other Blue-tooth devices like blue tooth enabled Cameras, Printers, Headsets, etc
