is it because of " deep " reasons ? :)

Nope. Some people (like me) are loners. They want to go where they want and when they want, eat and sleep whenever. They don't have the patience for putting up with having someone else along. They don't want their beautiful experience busied up with small talk. They want to nourish the soul and listen to their own thoughts. OK, maybe it is deep. But I've never been the type of woman who likes to travel or go shopping with someone else in tow. I won't carpool to out of town functions. Some women won't go anywhere alone, not even a public restroom. They prattle on and on about the most idiotic things you can imagine. Not my style. I even love going to the movies alone.

Actually, I have wondered about that myself! But I can appreciate the various different reasons some women may have for doing this. However, the bottom line is that it is really NOT a good idea in these times especially if she will be visiting a foreign country.
But back to the issue, I suppose that if there are any 'deep' issues, she probably needs the time alone and away from it all.
Family and friends should just try to understand and give her what she needs. It's also probably a time in which she can 'find' herself again.

Let's see:
1. If you are travelling alone you are more receptive to the culture and not always comparing 'how they do it and how we do it at home' with your buddy. You learn alot more travelling alone.
2. Not everybody wants to go birding in Panama or Belize with me. Some people just don't want to get up at 4:00 am and drag their tired, sorry asses throught the jungle in order to be at "the river's edge' by daybreak. Some people would really object to being eaten alive by the mosquito's. Some people would not like the idea of only having cold showers to look forward to, and sleeping in a bunkhouse at a wildlife refuge. Guess what? I don't want to travel with someone who whines continually and makes me feel like I didn't really leave this place as far behind as I had hoped to.

EDIT: 'INDIAN X'
Why would a woman need take time off work and pay tons of money for a 'trip' in order to do this? I simply don't understand. What is the point of the HUGE monetary expense - for something that can easily be had right at home?

ok here is the lowdown: we do it to get away from those who bother us; kids, hubby. ect. there are times we want to be alone. to think, take a pee by ourselves, sleep till noon, eat a meal in peace. ect.
