Well, the World Series may not be properly named, but it does have teams from both USA and Canada.
Football has emerged more into a sport that uses hands more than feet. But, the kicking has always been important. You can kick a field goal, an extra point, kickoff, and a punt. There used to be more kicks too, like a drop kick similiar to rugby. Both the game and the name of football come from English versions of Rugby or the more popular name in the 19th century, Rugby Football.
Hope this clarifies a bit.

Hi Peter M:
Please don't think that most Americans are insolent snobs like the first answerer—he obviously has some growing up to do!
Many Americans who come into Yahoo! Answers are immature...it is a free service. They do NOT represent the majority of U.S. citizens who love other people, other cultures, other traditions, other languages.
What a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the world, and some of these arrogant half-wits don't have a clue!
Please ignore the simpletons who think that only the U.S. counts, and give them a thumbs down so you don't have to reread their ghastly comments.
As wikipedia states, there is no evidence supporting the hypothesis that the newspaper, 'The New York World' started the name, 'The World Series'. They state: "The title of this championship may be confusing to some readers from countries where baseball is not a major sport, because the World Series is confined to the champions of two baseball leagues that currently operate only in the United States and Canada.
The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States, at a high level. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to 'World Series'."
About football, it should have been called something else to begin with, but, alas, the cow is out of the barn and has run away forever. {:)

It's called the World Series because as your dimwitted mind may not have already told you, it is not only US competing. It may only be US teams (and 1 Candian team) but they have players from all over the world. The MLB is for the best players in the world, not just in America. As for football, it is called that because the game is started by kicking the ball.

The "world series" was a name given to the baseball championships many many years ago by a newspaper in New York named the "The World" ( you know, like the globe, the sun, the mirror, etc) and the name stuck because it caught on and was understood because that newspaper promoted the event. American
Football involves the use of hands and feet legally, unlike Soccer (football) where the use of hands is strictly prohibited by anyone other than the goalie.

Why do you people keep TROLLING? We are really tired of this. The World Series is because THE BEST are in the U.S. and MLB for the most part. Anyway though it was orginally supposed to be what the goofy tournment they held basically was. They were supposed to PLAY teams from around the World. That never worked out though.

Canada competes in the World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays won in 1992 and 1993.There were also the Expos but Montreal did not have any intrest in them so they went to Washington. And you ue your foot in football, when you kick off, kick a field goal, kick and extra point, and punt.

Because back in da 1800's, America wuz the only country playing baseball, so they called it the World Series.
Football was created in the 1910's, when it wuz mainly a mix of soccer and rugby.
Oh yea, and we can do whatever the **** we want around here.

Because the U.S is pretty much the entire world.... at least the part that matters. There is already a game called handball, and we have soccer so why not call it football when you have to kick it sometimes and run a lot. You don't call basketball... "passdribbleshoot" do you?
Why would you assume that I'm a guy? The first part of my answer is so damn ridiculous that only a dumbass would think it was anything else than a joke about how everyone ELSE accuses U.S Americans to be the center of the universe. Only someone trying to hard to be 'cultured' would not consider sarcasm.
