As an American citizen you probably have a state you're resident of. If that's the case, you may be eligible for lower tuition fees and other in state benefits in the state universities (like University of Arizona or Colorado State University or University of Arkansas). Some universities ask for an entrance fee....

take the SAT's (for most states, there are other tests in other states). Make sure they are the American SAT's (other countries use the same name for different tests). you may have to cross the border depending on which part of Canada you're in.

Make sure to apply by November of your senior year.

US NEWS and world report publishes a list of universities and ranks them if you have no idea where you want to go. Of course, if you can get into Harvard or Johns Hopkins, and get scholarships to pay your way through, then go for it.

Or, and when you get in, beware of drugs, binge drinking, date rape, running out of money, burglars, bad roommates and bad neighborhoods.

There are many temptations for people leaving home, and its hard to tell who to trust. A lot of people will drop out and get you into trouble, so choose your friends and your social life wisely.
