Psychological conditioning. Come down to their wave length first. then once they've accepted you as an "equal" then u've kinda got their respect and they might listen.

Edit: In response to esoterik's answer, i think you're so wrong. My dad once did that to me for being naughty when i was 12. he stopped talking to me 1-2 weeks. ignored me completely. our relationship was never the same again. in fact.. i kinda gave up talking to him completely since then. its 11 years later and i still dont talk to him. Sometime last year he said he hadn't talked to me during that time as a form of punishment. i think it backfired badly. Don't EVER abuse your children emotionally, mentally (and physically of coursE).

My parents used an old trick......a belt or a switch, or whatever was handy then went across my butt. Spank those kids, they'll listen then. Or use my version of time out. Standing on 1 foot facing into the corner with their hands by their sides, no changing feet either.....and they stay that way until you're satisfied. Harsh, maybe, but it works like a charm

Talk to them on their level, that does not mean talk down to them as little people, but when approaching your child, get down and look at them talk to them porperly. I have two sons, neither of them use to listen to what i was saying until i reached down t their level, now i have constant respect, i didnt have to hit them, and in doing so i have built bonds between us, they know they can learn from me, they trust me in doing right by them.
Yelling and screaming doesnt work, if anything a child wants to ignore that type of expression. How would You react if someone yelled at you all the time,
be calm, be cool and be collected.
Children can also be little devils, knowing which buttons to push to upset a parent. But you got to love them.

Have your wife paint her eyes like bruises and tell your kids that the reason she has two black eyes is because she didn't friggin listen the first time.

You can't get them to listen when you don't have anything worth listening to say.

It may be painful for you as a parent, but if you pretend to stop caring for them, they'll come back to you eventually. Children want to be told what to do subconsciously, I believe. The rebel image that most children like to emulate hides their inner desires to be cared for, to get attention.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. Spank their butts. There is a diference between child abuse and swatting their behind.
