See, first of all if you got these fish recently, give them some time to adjust to their surroundings. New fish usually act like this.
Get some food which gets submerged in the water and position it such that your fish can see it. Also raise the temperature a little. This should help:)

I never had a problem with keeping just one Bala Shark. Mine was about 6" when I was forced to find it a new home (earthquake damage. good thing I worked part-time at an aquarium store and had the keys).

Temperature around 76F+- 4F ? Fish are cold-blooded. More active when it's on the warm side of their norm. (Slightly cooler seems to give them a longer lifespan, though)

Size of tank? They get fair sized. I had mine in a 5' 75 gal. show tank with about 7 other fish (16" aruana, 10" Tire-track eel, 7" Black Shark, 3-9" Fire eels and a 12" Fossil Cat.

Overcrowding? Aggressive tankmates? Good lighting? Too much activity around the tank?

Water quality? Neutral pH? Good water movement/filtration? Regular water changes with treated water?

Try live food? I don't remember my Bala being finicky, but I fed twice daily - Tetra flake for breakfast, live food for dinner. Got small aquatic worms available? Know how to gather/grow mosquito larvae? Maybe a bit of green algae. My books are packed away. Bala sharks might actually like a lot of vegetation. Variety is good.

My bala shark is about the size and eats flakes just fine. You could try blood worms or shrimp (either salt or mysis). Some fish are particular about their flakes. Get a few different small containers and give each a try. Check your water temperature, look for ick or other afflictions that might be causing a low appetite. Do you have proper air supply in the tank?

Good luck to you!

well if they're new fish, they may be on hunger strike as they settle in. balas are pretty skittish fish anyway, you know they need to be in groups larger than a pair?

they will also grow to 12" or more, and need a 100 gallon long tank or larger.

maybe your bala shark wanted to be spoonfed.
