Drugs and alcohol have been part & parcel of the entertainment business since I can remember. When I was a kid, I would hear that Jerry Lee Lewis had cancelled shows due to drinking; Janis Joplin, among others, overdosed; then the Rolling Stones' brushes w/the law; Crackney Houston, and on to Britney. John Belushi (od'd) said it best, "Cocaine is God's way of saying you make too much money." I think that they are so used to being up so much of the time as entertainers that they need chemicals to maintain that high during the rest of the day.

It is a demanding lifestyle, late nights early mornings. Have a drink to relax at night before you crawl in bed for 3 hours, have a pill to wake you up. Oh, you hurt your knee during that show or scene, take this it will make you feel better, no we can't cancel that appearance, you're still hurting, take another. It is a bad viscious cycle.
Now with the new very young run of celebs going into rehab, they almost all have one thing in common PARIS HILTON. Look who went from being almost completely off the radar as far as drugs were concerned, got tangled up with Paris, and next thing you know they are stumbling drunk, having nervous breakdowns, losing unhealthy amounts of weight and all going into rehab

because in the world of the rich and famous it's so readily available. They suddenly have all this fame and money and have no idea how to deal with it. I don't think being a celebrity is all it's cracked up to be. They don't live in the real world, and drugs probably go with the lifestyle. Look at Drew Barrymore when she was just a kid. You don't get an instruction book on how to be famous and letting the whole world see every move and mistake you make in your life

Lots of pressures + a high level achievement combine to form a situation in which a person is looking for an escape and also thinks they can do whatever they want. I think some of these people just want to be reminded of what it was like to be a normal human being with risks and rewards again.

I think celebrity life requires a level head, strong support system and an ability to cope. Hollywood is one of those strange enigmas - it loves you when your hot, and can literally destroy when you're not. Most people who choose to live that life always walk a fine line and are constantly on guard to make sure that they are loved. I can only imagine what it must be like to have your life constantly scrutinized and to have every private moment splashed on television all the time. I think most of us would be on drugs if we were forced into this life......

Boredom and leading shallow lives
Britney never went to school, never had to learn and deal with people on a social level that you and I did. She isn't the most educated person in the world, and probably doesn't really know how the world works. So when things get confusing and bad, she doesn't know how to cope and deal with life's problems.

Too much money and not enough places to spend it. Whitney got hooked up with that jerk who got her started...what a waste too. In addition, these people not only do their 'work'-whatever it might be-then they are expected to be seen at parties and events. They take things to keep them going and then to get them to shut down. Bad habits in the making. Good question!

They're bored.
They have cash.
They're looking for something interesting.
They don't know any better.
They're surrounded by enablers.
They're looking for any kind of attention.
They're not taught that actions have consequences. Same reason they wreck expensive cars, have such short-lived relationships and do other things that seem so crazy and irresponsible.
It's sad, really.

Because these people weren't strong enough to handle the stress that being in the public eye 24/7 is.

sadly it isn't only stars who fall into this, it's truly an epidemic. millions of average people are addicted to drugs and alcohol. people fall victim for many reasons, sadness, depression, boredom, or just looking for a thrill.
