I install flooring in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I've laid a ton of laminate in the past year. Carpet is still going strong as well, as I believe it always will. Laminate has definitely outsold carpet in the last year though, probably because there are laminates in every price range. $1 - $4 per foot. Low income families can afford them, and those who want a high quality floor can find one in the higher grades of laminate.

About the apartments... yes, I can understand that part. And... the builders, well, yeah they simply will not allow it.

But, look, laminate, cork, and other hard flooring is EXTREMELY popular among people looking to buy modular homes-- and new home owners as well, replacing carpet with laminate, or hard-wood flooring. Now for me, I have a combination of stone and hard-wood in my house. Carpet is... only for the little rugs I have in the bathrooms. And my wife has an easier time vacuuming and sweeping as well.

I have half laminate and half carpet all were new when I purchased my home one year ago. No my laminate is fine, but my carpet is torn, dirty, and just plain gross. I've cleaned it over and over and now I'm worried up everything under it. Can't wait to get rid of it! Though I will miss the warmth of carpet (I'll just need to get a lot of area rugs that can be easily replaced when they get gross).

No I don't think so. I just believe that carpet is more comfortable during the winter season thus more people buy carpets. However when the sun bakes us then we wish to be cooler. That's went decisions are made to get wooden flooring.

It's all true.

:D

I hope so,we have just put a new carpet down after having laminate. We thought laminate would be ideal for our 4 children and easier to keep on top of but I found it harder to keep on top of
not only did you have to sweep or hoover you had to mop and buff to keep it looking good, plus you had to keep moving furniture about like like TV cabinets and units because debris used to slide under them. I would sooner have my thick warm comfy homely carpet anyday and would never turn back.

I recently fitted a wooden flor in the hall of my home but had carpet laid in the living room, study, stairs and bedrooms.I personally cant stand all that noise from wood and carpet leaves the house warm.Just watch those dirty shoes as you enter.

I think that laminate flooring is out because it has so many chemicals in it in that it is perceived as unhealthy. (Those chemicals off-gas.) However, carpet, because it traps tons of dirt, is even worse. I think bamboo and cork floors are gaining in popularity.
