If your Harddrive is almost full, delete some unneeded photos, videos, games, programs. run a virus scan as you could have spyware and viruses slowing down your computer. look at your task bar and see what program clients are currently running and right click then selelct exit to the ones you arent using (common ones are Winamp, Quicktime, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and alot more) choose the classic windows theme, (in other words, if you have the blue, olive green, or silver XP theme, take it off and use the Windows Classic theme instead) Remove files larger than 5mb from your desktop to your My Documents folder. if you have a background you can simply remove it.
if all else fails you can always buy a new stick of RAM, if you have 512 or less it is most recommended that you get at least 1gb, 1.5g is what i have and im running xp soo smooth its just great.

Click start button, click run. Type in the run box "msconfig", without quotations. Hit enter. In the newly appeared window, click startup tab. Click "disable all". Many people will say not to do this, but I do. And my 2005 PC has started up and ran just as clean and fast as the day I bought it.

delete programs u don't use. delete startup programs so when u boot, it doesn't seem slow and finally defragment your hdd by going to start>programs>accessories>system tools> defragment
when u delete startup programs, you can start>run type in msconfig
then go to startup, make sure u know what your stopping, if u don't know, don't touch anything.
