I was laid off of my last two jobs and incurred a lot of debt, and the creditors are terrorizing me.
They did two judgments against me and there are more to come. I consulted an attorney and it looks like I should do a Ch.7, however, his fee is close to $3000? Is this typical in Southern California.

Yep. Attorneys in So. Cal are ridiculously overpriced. I find that amazing considering how many of them there are here but hey, who am I to judge?? Usually they will let you pay them over time since they are aware of your situation. The money is well spent considering a good attorney can save your house and car from being repo'ed. Good luck!!!

Goodness, check around. I think you can do the chapter 7 by yourself...I'm hoping that this is not the going rate. What part of California do you live in? I would interview a few more attorneys before you get too involved.
Have you thought of talking to credit councilers before you do the chapter 7? Sometimes they can do more and have a less effect on your credit. Just a thought.
Been there done this have the t-shirt and don't ever want to do it again....it's the pits to have the issues that go along with debt.
Take care, do some research before you settle into something okay, it's your credit and life not the attorneys, they don't care, they just want the funds and will do whatever you want with it not affecting them.

I'm a lawyer and I don't know for sure if you can get good bankruptcy help for less. The only way to know is to talk to at least 2 more attorneys.

See whose rates sound good but don't just pay attention to that. Also pay attention to who seems most knowledgeable about your problem and pick someone with a lot of bankruptcy court experience. It's very much a specialty. If half their practice is personal injury law they may be rusty in bankruptcy court, and that will complicate your case.

With a lawyer, sure, but you can get the papers at the courthouse and file it yourself for under $50.00. plus court cost. If I were you I would just go ahead and file chapter 13.
