I live in Northern Ohio, and the economy is rough here. I have a teaching degree, and one year of experience teaching out of state. My single year of teaching went relatively well, but that ended three years ago. I took a year off after that, and have worked nothing but dead end retail jobs ever since.

My job/career prospects are scary: I can either attain more retail work, which pays nothing and does not provide benefits, or I can get commission jobs with companies like AFLAC, or other bad jobs like working for Enterprise Rent a car, which practically is retail (I've read some true horror stories about that company).

To teach again, I'd have to move south or out west, where I do not have any friends or family. I'd have to live in an apartment again, which I have concerns about.

What am I doing wrong? Is there any career that I can get into within Ohio? People always make fun of what teachers make, but I don't think it's *that* bad...or am I missing out on something?

Thanks for the responses! I should add that with failing levies and state budget cuts, the teaching market is very tight in Ohio.

This is not the case in other parts of the country.

when reading about your situation, I dont get a sense of what you are really interested in. What I could see is only that you hate retail - but you do not say why you hate retail. Also, you did not elaborate on why you left teaching. I think you need to look within yourself and find out what you enjoy. There are plenty of other options out there - clerical/admin work, sales job and so on. But key thing is you need to know what you want before you could really get a career out of anything.

Perhaps you should consider going a different route entirely. I have a home business in health and wellness that is growing far quicker than I ever imagined. I market only one product, but it is really taking the world by storm. The results for just me and my family have caused this to grow daily. Incomes of $20k/mo are definately not unusual in this business, and it comes with all the training and mentoring to really help you achieve your goals.

Not trying to sound snide, but there aren't any schools in the area that you live in now that you could teach at? Or do you teach a specific subject that is only taught in the south and west?

I don't understand why you can't teach in Ohio again. Teachers are well-respected and have great benefits and insurance. I would teach instead of minimum wage retail.

Whatever you do, do not go to work for AFLAC. It is a cut-throat business with your own bosses smiling while they screw you out of you own sales commissions. You would be better off teaching.
