If you have a good sense of discernment, then I think it's appropriate - as in you can discern that Holden's behavior stems from the fact that he could use some serious guidance.

Nikki darlin ....55% of the commercials on your afternoon television is not suitable for a 14 year old!!! 98% of the games sold for the computer are not suitable for a 14 year old. But there you have it. Those commercials and games are accessable to 10 year olds. The Catcher in the Rye? That was written in the last century when at least 24 of today's commercials would be considered detrimental the well being of our youth and they would have caused a scandal so huge that careers would be lost for them.
So go ahead, read the book because at your age these days you've seen more on T.V. than 40 year olds did when the book was published.

I love the book but I didn't read it until I was sixteen. And I'm glad I ignorantly waited just long enough to really appreciate it. Now it's my favorite novel.
The scandel around the book was caused by some prudent parents that really did care about their children...but were a little blind to the world outside their doors and how quickly that world can educate said children.
Another reason for scandel: the book Catcher in the Rye was rumored to be on the person of Mark David Chapman, the assassin of John Lennon, and John Hinkley, Jr., Reagan's would-be assassin, at the time of their arrests.
It really is a very good book. But it isn't easy to love.

I read the book at 12 or 13 for a book report. It was not discussed among peers so it was I guess not a biggie, simply bah, another book to report on, and school work.Lets finish the job as fast as we can.
It was an age of non appreciation. when school work was a chore. Reading novels for relaxation and discovery came a few years later.

years ago it was required reading for high school, usually seniors but some parents had a fit so most schools dont use it anymore, it was considered a dirty book when i was in school, a hundred years ago, however i never read it, i think its one of those truly depressing books as well as on the sexual side, a mature 14 yr old might get something from it, but i think there are ten thousand books out there that are likely better. however its your choice. My daughter was reading anne rice at that age, and i never read one till she was married, anne is a bit on the racy side in my estimation.

i am reading that book right now for school. I haven't finished it yet but I've gotten pretty far. it is more of an adult type book. it just depends on what your expecting i guess. its got a lot of language in it and talk about sex and sexual things. it just depends on what your ready for. I personally wouldn't recommend this book for anyone under your age but again it all depends on what your ready to read and want to read about. i think its a pretty good book and that it brings up a lot of good points about being a teenager and what life really is sometimes.

It's about a young man who finds disgust with phonies in the world, all the while ironically ignoring his own lack of sincerity.
It's good reading for a 14 year old. There's a few mild swear words, which parents freak out about, so they want it banned from school libraries sometimes. In truth, I don't know a 14 year old who hasn't heard almost every word in the book.

I read it as a senior in high school. There's lots of cussing, and topics in the book include sex, expulsion from school, depression, suicidal thoughts, therapy, fights, etc. It was actually a pretty crappy story, like much of the required reading in high school. I don't recommend the book, personally. There is much better literature out there.
