This series of paperbacks were about a gang of detectives that came from diversified backgrounds. I think the series was set in the 1940's or 1950's. Each episode involved two or more of the gang as the lead characters for that particular paperback. I think the "head" of the detectives first name was Richard. This series was published in the early to mid seventies and was aimed/marketed more for boys in the 10-15 age range. I had about 10-12 different issues many years ago, for some reason about a month ago the cover of an issue popped into my head and has been driving me nuts trying to remember the name of the series or author. The title on the cover I think is called "The Man From Atlantis" and it had nothing to do with that cheesey tv show starring Patrick Duffy. The cover of each issue had a tough looking guy (Richard ?) with a big cleft in his chin. If anyone can help me figure this out it would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I am 99.9% positive they are "The Avenger" books from Ron Goulart. Attached is a link that shows the authors works, and if you scroll down you will see book covers like the ones you describe Good luck!
