how do japanese people usually view chinese foreigners? for example, i am chinese american, will i be treated differently from a caucasian foreigner? or if not treated differently, will people think of chinese americans differently because of old hostilities between china + japan?

OK, let's try this again -.- Say I am chinese american and I have a caucasian (white) american friend. If we travel to Japan together, would people treat us differently because of our skin color even though we're equally fluent in English and equally "westernized" whatever that means

Japanese people typically DO know the difference between Chinese and Japanese, and Chinese people living in Japan are sometimes associated with crime (because the media is very quick to report crimes by foreigners, many of which are Chinese).

With that said, you and your friend are American, and they would easily recognize this, especially since you are traveling together. You will not be judged on the basis of being from two different races, either, in case you are wondering. You will be a tourist, and tourists are treated quite kindly. If people stare at you or your friend, it is not hostile. Staring occurs simply because many Japanese people do not see a lot of foreigners, so it's interesting and unusual. If you go to rural areas, this will occur more often. Your friend will be more likely to get stares simply because s/he will stand out more.

I hope that helps.

I am an Asian American also. I have been living in Tokyo for almost 4 years. All of my experiences have been positive. I can say that you should also have a very nice experience also. If anything, because you may look Japanese, especially next to your friend, people at stores or restauraunts may think that you speak Japanese. Just say I am sorry, I cannot speak Japanese and things will be OK. When we fist moved to Tokyo, my wife spoke no Japanese and she communicated by using simple and clear English. When it comes to tourist places, there are usually people who can speak or at least try and communicate in English. In your case things should all be fine. Your worries about the historical past are not things that will affect you on a day to day basis. You should have a fun time and there should be nothing to worry about at all.

im not too sure about the japanese, but i taught english in korea .im filipino american. my experience there was pretty pleasant. obviously, since u do share similar physical characteristics u can blend in more into the population like i did. i noticed that about 70-80% of the time they knew i was a foreigner but the other times i had to open my mouth and talk for them to finally figure it out.

i noticed my caucasian friends in korea.they were almost like celebs. people would take pics of them while they were walking or pull the hair on their arms or just get stared at relentlessly...seeing caucasians in their country (especially in the smaller cities) is kinda like seeing a movie star or something. they (caucasian friends) would tell me that the attention was cool at first...then it got old and annoying.

when i went to the beach with a white friend of mine, we were asked where we were from by these english speaking indian guys...my friend said america...i said the same thing...then the guy says to me...'oh i'm thinking philippines.'

what im trying to say is its hard for people in some places to fathom non-caucasians being fluent in english and being 'american'.

also, while most lke foreigners and are very kind to u, some will be very rude to u for the same reason.

I'm a Phillipino/American, and the last time I was in Japan was in
1974. The Japanese were pretty much the same then as they are now. They believe they are superior to other races, especially
to other asians and orientals. They also have extremely narrow views of women and what their place in life is. I was only there for a month, and I don't believe that the younger people think the same way, but there are extremists anywhere and everywhere.

reckoning on the type you seem at it, that is a earnings or a project relating to discovering jap. the earnings would be that jap have a tendency to anticipate Asian-looking human beings to talk jap, and as a result won't dumb down their way of chatting with you. they're going to consult you greater clearly than another foreigners could anticipate. that could rather advance your language acquirement. on the different hand, while you're no longer arranged to maintain up the %., you will ask your self why your different distant places buddies get a harm, yet you'll be able to desire to attempt so problematical at discovering jap. regrettably some jap have a adverse photograph in direction of Filipinos, so whether it is your seem, then some human beings could seem down on you. there are countless Filipinas in Japan working interior the intercourse commerce, and a great variety of jap affiliate Filipinas with that. i've got met human beings in Japan from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Bangladesh. all of them have been rather superb human beings and that they have got been somewhat nicely-respected, the two by utilising different foreigners and by utilising jap. besides, take each little thing with a grain of salt, alongside with what I say.

Japanese see themselves as being kinda "white."

They look down on other Asians.

Not really.
These days, generally, the United States is more tolerant that it had been. That includes for most minorities as well.
