2001 spurs defeat mavs, lakers defeat spurs, lakers win title.
2002 mavs lose to sacramento, lakers defeat spurs, lakers win title.
2003 spurs defeat lakers and mavs, spurs win title.

The Spurs-Lakers rivalry was great. It had some of the most memorable events in NBA history. They gave the fans a thrill. The Lakers have won most of their rivalry, though. They became too far apart as the Lakers became too strong for the Spurs. The Lakers were visiting the Finals regularly.
In terms of history, I like the LAL-SAS rivalry. The Spurs and Dallas, however, is even better because they match up better. They are more even. These is the type of rivalry that would reach a game seven almost everytime.

#1 Rivalry is Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat - Kobe vs. D-Wade is the best on court and Kobe vs. Shaq is great for the media. Dont forget Phil vs Pat and that both teams have swaped numerous players.
#2 is tri-Rivalry. It is the reace for supremacy in the west between the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs. When these teams play the games really matter against each other.
#3 is New York Knicks vs New Jersey Nets. Its just a regional rivalry that fills seats when the two play. It just beats out LA Lakers and LA Clippers but the Lakers already made the list and whats better than watching two underachieving team beating the brains out of each other.
* I'd like to note that NBA rivalries arent very intense. The players don't hate each other nor do the fans. There is no pride involved and it is all money so it isnt fierce at all. I would pick any college rivalry over this. Plus the NBA was recently remodeled with the new divisions so it may take a decade or two before things get intense form the constant playing of each other.

How are the mavs a rivalry at all or in the discussion?
They have won exactly nothing and until you win something you mean nothing
The best is obviously the Lakers and Spurs
the spur fans still feat the lakers and check in with the team on all the message boards constantly and they still remember Fisher and .4
The lakers have ended numerous spur repeat opportunities and were contending teams for much of the past decade
the mavs are just another team and don't even compare to such dominant success

it would definitely be the lakers-spurs matchup.. there was excellent basketball played in there.. both teams succeeded the other every other year or so.. But to cap it off, remember Derek Fisher??

Sorry, i'm a Lakers fan yet as partial to basketball I ought to positioned my 2 cents into that final 2d no-call by potential of the ref. whilst Barry pump faked he ought to have long gone lower back up and shot the ball and he might've gotten the call yet incredibly he tried to dribble to the main suitable and ran into Fisher and did no longer get the foul call.
