Also I should probably add that I had to do a system recovery recently.

Sometimes this may be a firewall but alot of the time you can do 2 different things. One thing you can do is if you know how to get into the interface of the modem you can reset it and then set up PPPoe in it. otherwise if you have Windows XP you can try creating a broadband connection. going to control panel and then network connections clicking on creating a new connection and then going that way. Otherwise if you have windows xp you can run netsh i i r r from the command prompt and then restart your computer. to reset TCP/IP on your computer. If you do this make sure you disable your firewalls first. Right now I guarantee if you do an ipconfig you are either getting an ip address that starts with 169.xxx or all 0's.

Well, my first guess would be check your modem connections...from there, check with your ISP to see if they have an outage in the area.
Usually when you get that error you have a problem on your end, so, if you have XP - check device manager to see if your NIC has a error...then check the back of your computer to see if the lights on the NIC are on when the Enet cord is plugged in. If not you may have a faulty NIC or a bad Enet cord.
If that does not help...try hooking the modem (if DSL) thru USB and see if it works...
Do a scan for viruses too (wouldnt hurt)
If all else fails and you have done all this - I would say call Microsoft.

There are many possibilities. Here are two common ones I have found to cause this type of problem.

The windows FIREWALL and ANTI VIRUS. Be careful. Shutting these down or off can expose you to problems but if done carefully and then turned back on once connected, you might make it through this problem.

The windows firewall was the least of my worries. The Norton Anti Virus was my problem. Once I DISABLED it and then re-tried connecting, I made it out and connected to the Internet. While connected to the Internet and able to surf, I then turned on the Windows Firewall and it created a rule to allow my PC out. I then turned on NORTON and it also created a rule allowing my PC out to the Internet.

There are some of your basic steps. I was dealing with Cable High Speed Internet access via a Windows XP and Windows 98 PCs. If you are using a modem, then check your IP settings as they should be using DHCP. Your ISP might be able to help you with dial-up settings.

Well, in order to tell you somthing for real, i will first need to now if you are wireless or wired. Second, what type of router you have, since you are saying you have limated or no connection, i am assuming you have wireless connection. Tell you one trick i learned hard way, is check the type of phone you have, if you have cordless phone, and its 2.4 GHz, its going to cause interfarances, and whats the distance, and also if there are alot of doors or walls between the router and the computer, Anyway if this does not helps you sorry, because i don't now anything about your network. good luck. take care.

Do you use an external (not Windows Provided) Connection Driver like Robert Schlabach's Broadband over Ethernet (PPoE) Drivers?
You should uninstall it then and reinstall it since Windows breaks it sometimes when you Recover it from an older Storepoint.

Its a 56K modem and your dialing into a ISP.
Call your ISP and ask to reset your session. Or check your settings to match the ISP modem settings. Usually PPP/Slip protocols require settings specific to the ISP location and phone number on the ISP side.
