FI = fidelity

It's a carry-over from hi-fi (high fidelity) but really has nothing to do with the technology. It's kind of like "podcast" with has nothing to do with "broadcast" - a podcast is a recorded audio file and it's not necessarily "broadcast" in the true sense of the word.

sounds like Hi-Fi in stereo. maybe multimedia video and sound streams instead of data frames or packets.
802.11a had both at 54Mbps but distance
802.11b had no support for multimedia at 10Mbps and optional Multimedia thats proprietary support. company office use.
802.11g has standard multimedia support and small-large data packet support 54Mbps and distance.
802.11n has support for gaming, chat, 300Mbps
802.1 regular original phone line 300 to 1200 baud.

dont touch it if it does not have a FCC, UL sticker better yet department of health.
