examine out some Beethoven Piano Concertos. Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte is tremendously unhappy...Chopin's Prelude in C Minor is likewise very drudge-like (regrettably usurped via Barry Manilow in a gawd-undesirable pop music).

Not sure if you mean strictly classical music, but when you say sad and haunting, I think of Brian Eno's 70s and 80s instrumental electronic ambient music. Like, "Music for Films", "Music for Airports". Just an idea?

Many of the songs by Tori Amos are haunting if not eccletic. The most haunting song of hers I've heard would have to be "Precious Things".

the opening and piano music in "How You've Grown" by 10,000 Maniacs featuring Natalie Merchant on Vocals is a good one and if I heard the track listening to it I thought I heard orchestral music in the background as well so that may suit your request

The song I reccomended is on the album Our Time In Eden by 10,000 Maniacs check it out and see if what I think matches what you need it for
