When you are buying a computer you need to look at which one best fits what you want it for. You need to look at the specs of the machine you are thinking of buying and look into what you need for what you want to do on the machine. Then you compare the specs of what you're looking at and what you want to do on it. That gives you your best answer.

As far as GB, are you talking HDD or RAM? HDD I have a 60 and have a BUNCH of stuff on it though you can eventually run out. If you're talking RAM I think most come with 1 or 2 gigs of RAM now that Vista's out and coming preinstalled on new computers.

If you want it for everyday use Toshiba and Sony are great.

If you want it for business I have a thing for the Sony Vaio even though I don't own one yet. :(

If you want it for gaming you want alienware.

So see it all depends on what you want it for. I find my Toshiba Sattelite works wonders as an all around machine. I use it for digital photography, DJing, and even some gaming, as well as school and regular use.

If you're talking about Hard Drive GB, then get about twice what you think you'll need.
If you're talking about system RAM, then get as much as you can afford, up to the maximum the system will hold.
Personally, I've had HPs. And I've had a Toshiba for the last 4 years. I like the Toshiba Satellite better than any computer I've ever had. And I've had everything from an original Apple and an original IBM, since about 1982. Toshiba is the system that has most impressed me over the years. I'll be upgrading to a new Toshiba Satellite this summer; one with a 64bit processor and Windows Vista. With luck, I'll be able to max out the system RAM on it. Increasing RAM speeds up a computer way more than getting a faster processor. It gives the operating system more room to juggle programs and images, thus freeing up disk space and the endless swapping out of program parts to the disk.

don't buy sony. cheap parts. dell makes decent ones for good prices. after that i would go with HP. most laptops only last 2-3 years due to being small and moved around and all that. computers last 3-4 years on average.. but a lot last longer. dells and HP should last at least 3 years. toshiba ones operate a pretty high temperatures which gets annoying(some shut down due to overheating, and ive had to open up a couple and clean the fan and dust to help it not overheat) . GB isnt a huge deal. if u have a lot of music, pictures, documents.. 80GB minimum. the more important spec u should look for is RAM.. i suggest at least 1 GB.. but id go with 2 if ure getting one with Windows Vista that was just released.
