My furnance just quit working. I turned the switch off on it, but left the gas on. Is this safe to do? It was making a lot of noise but it wasn't doing any thing else. Thats why I turned the switch off.

I'd be safe and switch the gas off. I mean you're already there (okay so you might be on the Internet reading this at the moment but you get the point!) so why not? If the thing was acting funky then I'd turn off the gas just in case. Better safe then sorry!

And Lord imagine what would happen if it started leaking gas with you asleep in the house tonight! *gulp*

Usually a furnace even a wonky one is safe when it is not working. However if you know where the gas cutoff valve is that supplies gas to your furnace it would not hurt to turn it off. However if you do you will have to call a technician to service the furnace before you can turn it back on.
From your description it is probable that the exhaust fan that purges the system before the burners can light has blown a bearing and can not provide adequate suction to allow the furnace to operate. The safety system is working.
If you can not find the gas cutoff valve or it is hard to reach leave the thermostat off and call a repair technician in the morning.

Hope you have a good blanket.

It might be okay, but just to be safe...turn it off.

I have 2 gas fireplaces here. When the pilot light goes out, I turn them to the off position. It's better to go on the safe side. Plus you will save on your gas bill.

Did you turn the power switch off or the control knob off ?
The control knob will (should) shut only control off and (on later model units) will try igniting the burners and shut down a number of times going through the cycles.
The power switch(electric) will shut down the whole unit .

Without seeing your unit, I won't answer. Be safe and call a heating tech to come and check it out.
