British and American armies defeated the French in the French and Indian War....But wait...that's not the answer...there's more. (The French and Indian War was the beginning. It started the Seven Years War—most people in Canada and Europe don't even know what the French and Indian War is...they consider it part of the Seven Years War, or as some call it in French-speaking Canada, 'The Conquest', when Britain won Canada from the French.)

See http://www.salemwitchtrials.com/history/1763-1783.htm:
"Why Great Britain eventually won: When William Pitt joined the British leaders he turned things around. He began to treat the Americans like equals or allies instead of subordinates. This lead Americans to feel a sense of pride and a renewed sense of spirit that sent them into several victories that made France eventually concede."

So there's your answer (America won independence from the French): a) the British recognize American loyalty in the French and Indian War, which the British would call the Seven Years War, but which actually started in North America before the official 'Seven' Years War began over in Europe.

To maintain a global empire, Britain needed soldiers born in the American colonies...and cash. They raised taxes on American colonists, who saw their rights as 'Englishmen' being trampled on. Hence, Americans enlisted the help of the French to win our independence from Britain.

Americans enlisted the British—we mostly considered ourselves Englishmen—to get rid of the French, and then we enlisted the French to get rid of the English still loyal to the King.
