okay the problem is set up x divided by 5 + x divided by 8 = 1. okay my question is how do you set this up to get 40 divided by 13 as the answer. 40/13 is the answer i just need to know how i set this up to get the answer of 40/13. I understand that 40 is what both 8 and 5 will go into evenly. Thanks Kelly

40/13 = x/5 + x/8

I know u understand that the addition of that kind of number is we have to make it same first:
40/13 = (x*8)/(5*8) + (x*5)/(8*5)

40/13 = 8x/40 + 5x/40

40/13 = (8x+5x)/40

40/13 = 13x/40

Then, we multiply it by crossing it:

40*40 = 13*13x

1600 = 169x

1600/169 = x

9.46 = x

First, turn it into an equation.

x/5 + x/8 = 40/13

Multiply everything by (8)(5)(13), to get

(8)(13)x + (5)(13)x = 40(8)(5)

Factor and solve.

13x(8 + 5) = 40(8)(5)
13x(13) = 40(8)(5)
x = [40*8*5]/[13*13]
x = 1600/169

x/5 + x/8 =
LCD(5 and 8) = 40
8x/5 + 5x/8 = 40/40
13x/40 = 40/40
13x = 40
x = 40/13

x/5 + x/8 =1

find lowest common multiple of 5 and 8
in this case, it is 40

then the equation will be
(8x)/40 + (5x)/40 = 1

multiply throughout by 40
u will get
8x + 5x = 40
which is equal to 13x = 40

to get x,
divide throughout by 13
which will get u
x = 40/13 , which is the question asked.

I suppose the question how do you go about solving the equation

x/5+x/8=1

The easiest way to deal with fractions in equations is to multiply the whole equation by the numbers on the bottom of the fractions.

So if we multiply by 5, we get

x+5x/8=5

and then multiply by 8,

8x+5x=40

or

13x=40

and then its easy to see that x=40/13

The neat way of looking at the answer is that x = (8*5)/(8+5).

x/5 + x/8 = 1

Factor x out,
x(1/5 + 1/8) = 1

Solve for x,
x
= 1/(1/5 + 1/8)
= 40/(8+5)
= 40/13

(x/5)+(x/8)=40/13?
if so then find the common denomitator
(8x/40)+(5x/40)
13x/40=40/13
multiply both sides by 40/13 and you get x=1600/169

did you mean it like that:
x/5 + x/8 = 40/13
(8x + 5x)/40 = 40/13
13x = 1600/13
x=1600/169

i'm not sure

i got an x=9.47 (approximately)

My solution:
x/5 + x/8 = 40/13
(8x+5x)/40 = 40/13
* to cancel 40: 40(13x/40) = (40/13)40
13(13x) = (1600/ 13)13
169x= 1600
x = 9.467455...
= 9.47
