Does it seem there've been a rash of shameless copycat, (orphaned)-Kids-in-fantasyland books/movies out?

& what about that "Lemony Snicket"-something or other series of books? There're also a bunch of lesser-known similar books out as well.

Not saying the *concept* is new. It isn't. But where were all those other stories & book-to-movie deals *before* Potter?

I don't think that's quite fair. And I think J.K Rowling herself would disagree with you. Rowling is a spectacular story-teller... but orphaned kids in fantasy land stories are as old as can be.

For child-fantasy stories, you almost have to the child be an orphan, be away at school or be dreaming the events. Face it, well -supervised kids don't get to go off on adventures.

C.S. Lewis, Terry Pratchett, L. Frank Baum, Lewis Carroll, and many others all wove these sorts of yarns long before Rowling dreamed up Harry.
