A sprain is a a stretched or torn ligament and can be diagnosed by looking for certain symptoms. Pain, inability to put weight on the affected part, lumps or bumps, possibly an odd angle of the affected joint, possibly numbness in the area or redness. The presence and degree of the symptoms tells them if it's a sprain and what grade of sprain it is.

When I sprained mine, it became real swollen but I could put a little weight on it.
When I pulled a ligament, every time I set my foot down it became as big as a balloon. It felt so tight from the swelling. I had to wear a cast.
When I broke my foot, on top, I was able to put weight on it. Wore a cast. Next time doctor just put in walking cast.
When I broke my ankle I couldn't put weight on it. Cast again.
I would say the pulled ligiments was worse than the breaks, and toke longer to heal.
By the way a tip to walk straight after the cast is off, is go up and down stairs, keeping the foot pointed forward, otherwise you end up walking like a duck and have back problems, later.
My husband did that...and he was the one that suggested the stairs when I got my cast off.
Walk in the snow or sand and make sure you got those feet straight.
By the way I had sprain after sprain until I finally broke it, now its great no more sprains.

sprains take longer than breaks to to heal, when I sprained my ankles each and anytime i became on crutches for about per week. It helps it get extra appropriate interior the longer time period to enable it heal correct. you don't want a larger probability for yet another sprain or spoil on your ankle. Wait some extra days to be probability-free, it would not must be 7 days notwithstanding it would a minimum of be 5.

X-rays to see if it is broken, if not, and the ankle is swollen than in all probability it is sprained.
