You are taking a music class aren't you? Opera is music. I never liked opera until I really listened to it. Then I heard how the instruments blended and how the vocals worked with the instruments and how the whole thing came together as a composition of music. At that point the style didn't matter. You can prefer one style of music over another but you really can't appreciate music unless you truly feel every style. If you restrict yourself to only what you prefer, then why take a music class in the first place?

My love for opera began in middleschool music classes. It just takes some deprogramming from "oh, this is that boring old people music" to thinking "wow, this is cool...who knew there was so much sex and violence in opera".
