I believe that legally to be a Jr. both names have to be the same, but if you really wanted to you could name him Junior as part of his name. You know, like Joseph Christopher Junior whatever your last name is. My husband is a Jr.-same first and middle as his dad. My father-in-law has the same first name as his father, but different middle name, so he is not a Jr.

I never thought about this, but our we named our son with my husband's first name and a different middle name and put jr. on the birth certificate. No one questioned us. You can put whatever you want on the birth certificate. So he is a jr. even though the middle names aren't the same. No one we know has told us he's not a jr. because he has a different middle name. Joseph Christopher sounds great. Just put Jr. on the birth certificate!

Legally speaking, I don't think it really matters. No one is going to stop you from putting Junior on the birth certificate if the first and middle names don't match. You can do whatever you want.

Have you considered Junior as a nickname? My son, husband, and father-in-law share the same first names, but all of them have different middle names. My father-in-law likes to call my son "J-3."

Technically speaking, the first and middle names have to be the same in order for the younger to be a Jr. However, I see no reason that you couldn't call him Jr. anyways....
