St Valentine (or Valentinus) secretly married couples contrary to the rule of Emperor Claudius II who wanted men to join his military leagues and therefore cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. Another legend tells of a message containing a a yellow crocus which cured his jailer's daughter of blindness, it was signed “From your Valentine”
In 496 Pope Gelasius I named February 14 as Saint Valentine’s Day.
In medieval times love notes were exchanged during February because it was the mating season of birds and over the years St. Valentine’s day became the principle day for this. So traditionally St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.
