Your price seems steep, what dates are you looking for? The RIU chains are an excellent pick for families, they have kids pools and clubs at most resorts and the food and service is great, have you checked the RIU website directly? That's where I find my deals, they have sales all the time, and if that doesn't work for you I would try a travel agent who can check with their suppliers to see if they have a better rate, other family resorts that I've would say are great are

Omni Resort
Gran Caribe Real
Dreams Resort
Barcelo Tucancun

Below is what RIU has now, right from their website

Cancun - Riu Caribe Special
Starting from $112 per person per night, based on double occupancy, all inclusive.Offer valid from April 16 to June 23, 2007. Reservations must be made from February 18 to March 15, 2007.

Other RIU properties are offered too. Go to http://www.riu.com for updates.

Have fun

P.S Sometimes it's cheaper to do you hotel separate , and get a seat sale on your air, and transfers in Cancun
are cheap anyway, just make sure you set up your pick up and drop off times with them correctly.

Listen....it is a big decision....but it is a personal choice. Everybody has a different opinion. I am going to give you the heads up. If you plan on spending most of your time on the resort.....soaking up the sun....playing at the pool....strolling the beach......get the all-inclusive. It is so much easier.....just order...show your armband and eat. I would assume....with a three year old.....that is your plans. Go with either RIU Caribe or Gran Caribe Real (I think both have kids programs). If you want to get out and about every day and will not be at the resort.....don't get all inclusive. Actually....I have access to a travel agent site where I can rent time shares at a really good price......which I am recommending Royal Sands. I looked at prices for April out of Los Angeles and it is running about 2500-3000. Two years ago.....prices were cheaper....but since the hurricane and all the construction costs.....Cancun is more expensive. You can actually stay an entire week about as cheap as you can 4-5 nights. If you want me to help you find a place....I would be glad to help you. You also have to weight the cost of a package against the cost of renting a condo and the airfare. Usually the package comes out cheaper in the end and is much easier. If you have any questions....contact me at 931-265-9991 or e-mail me sunsationvacations@yahoo.com. I am a certified Cancun specialist and I just love helping people enjoy their dream vacation in Cancun......my passion!!!

Hi Melinda ... Those prices are about average for the area. If you're wanting a tourist/party atmosphere, then Cancun is a good choice. However, you could stay outside of Cancun in Playa del Carmen where there are nicer all-inclusive resorts and less of a "spring break" atmosphere.

Cozumel is a great place to stay if you're interested in snorkel, SNUBA, or scuba. Best reefs next to Great Barrier in Australia.

Whichever place you go, don't go shopping while the cruise ships are in dock. Prices are higher then ... wait until around 4pm when the cruisers are getting back on board. Prices go down and vendors are ready to sell. Some will bargain with you so they can finish the day with a sale.

Oh and don't bite from the people along the shopping areas who say they'll give you a great deal for a "package". You'd do better (and have more reliable service) if you go through your resort.

Have a great time! Bueno Suerta!

Prices in cancun have gone up considerably for one reason: The hurricane two years ago, practically wiped out Cancun. All the hotels were old and somewhat run down. They were forced to rebuild most from scratch. Mexico even had to drudge sand from the deep ocean to replace all the beautiful white sandy beaches. I have been to Cancun 3 times. All three I stayed at the Palace resorts all inclusive. I like the fact that I don't have to reach into my pocket every time I want a meal, drink or snack. Sun Palace was higher end, and nice, but not really for kids. Beach Palace was probably the best visit I had there. It's right in the middle of the hotel zone, great beach, and they just rebuilt it (It was one of the oldest hotels around, and it showed). The staff was always kind, friendly and extremely helpful. The other opinions are correct, food isn't very expensive there, so you can probably get a better deal staying at a hotel and paying your own way for meals. Your requirements will certainly determine the best hotel to stay at. For example, Cancun Palace was a party hotel with noisy teenagers everywhere. Not a good place for a family with young children, but ideal if you are a college spring breaker. Sun Palace was quite and relaxing, at the north end of the beach strip, but not many other kids around. Beach Palace was an ideal blend for our family. We met many nice families there. Kids played together, parents hung out together.

We went to Cancun last year and stayed at the Gran Caribe Real all inclusive. The price was great and you couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Everything was spotless. I also have a small child and even though I did not bring her on the trip, I wouldn't hesitate to bring her to this resort. I only saw one person that was sloppy drunk and only one pair of topless beach walkers. There is not one thing negative I could say about this place with the exception of the time share people, but all you have to do is say no and they will leave you alone. The web site for the hotel is www.realresorts.com. I booked my trip through nwa.com under vacation packages. We are going again this year and are going back to the same place. My price for 2 adults for 5 nights with airfare and ground transportation to the hotel and back was $2100.00 and that includes travel insurance in case you need to cancel for any reason. I hope you have a great time and find the place and price you are looking for. You can go to tripadvisor.com and type in Gran Caribe Real in the search bar and find great reviews and real photos of the resort. Hope this helps a little.

Been there many times and always stay at Moon Palace. Its about 10 miles outside of Cancun. Its a nice all inclusive and we have had no problems. The also have a kids club there to keep the little ones entertained if that is something you might want. The Palace Resorts in downtown Cancun are older than this one but they are in town. There is another Palace resort right next to the Moon Palace called the Sunrise. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Hope this helps out.

try orbitz.com i got a good deal there when i booked air and hotel together. use promo code: luv200 and get 200 off, go online for more details... also travel by jen they have deals too. i'd stay at any of their 4 star, but with the 2.5-3 star i'd only trust: aquamarina, dos playas, hotetur... check out the reviews, people were surpringly pleased and they looked just fine when i drove past them (i got a great deal at nh-krystal hotel in the heart of everything ocean view too)... i didn't go all inclusive and had a great time because i did research and i was not dependent on my hotel activities or the crappy food they had to offer.

If you really want to save some money don't stay in the RIU its a nice hotel but to expensive try these one its small and they include breakfast with the room you you just have to pay for lunch and diner
I stay there last year its near everything just take the bus, taxis are real expensive just take one when you go back to the airport

http://www.grlagoon.com/

The only draw back is its on the lagoon side but you can get on the beach in any hotel

airfare that's cheap from LA $350 to $500 round trip

Well it looks like you are trying to mix your budget around a bit to see what it will bring.

Hotel food is expensive and you get locked into one place .... can be boring after a few days. Why don't you step out and see some of the cafe and restaurants around the place.

Here's a list of hotels so that you can sort with the filters, star ratings , budget and location. Hopefully it will help you to compare easily the offers.
