i have had a couple of full grown oscars in my 125gallon. At different times of course.
a single oscar needs at least 75 gallons, they will grow to about 16 inches, the ones i owned grew to about 18 inches. They are very messy fish so you will need a canister filter, which can run about 200-400 dollars. The tank should be 75 + gallons, which will run over 100 dollars. Hood so they dont jump is another 100 dollars.
They will eat anything so live foods are required, but they are still very messy fish.

Oscars are the single best pet fish to get. They have more personality and owner interaction than just about anything else.
They get huge though. They grow about 1/2 to 3/4 an inch a month. They get to be 15 inches or so. Minimum tank for just one of these guys is 60 gallons, which most people don't realize when buying them.
They're pretty ruthless killers. Which is nice to watch.

for an oscar you will eventually need a 75-100 gallon tank just for one
they are highly aggressive towards other oscars, and other fish, and the only tankmates must be of similar size and be able to hold their own when the oscar is in a bad mood, which they are a lot of the time.
oscars are highly personable fish, ones that really react to humans, they'll come and look at you, nibble, jump out and try and bite you etc etc.

oscars make great pets..you wouldnt want to put an oscar in anything less than 55 gallon..or at least i wouldnt.. they get pretty darn big.. up to 1000lbs and 40 ft long in the wild..ok just kidding.. they can reach a length from 12-14 inches. so they are a big fish. oscars dont need to school so 1 would do just fine.. cant put many other fish with them as they are slighty aggressive not as much aggressive as territorial. so.. it all depends on the size of your tank.

I had two. They don't die easily. They don't require a whole lot of tank attention. I had mine so long, they grew to huge sizes. I gave them to a fish store because I couldn't take them with me when I moved. But I don't suggest purchasing fish from Walmart. They always have dead fish in the aquariums and that is a bad sign. Go to a store that specializes in fish because they are experienced in tank maintenance. Buy small. They're less expensive and they grow great anyways. But before you buy, ask them how to first prepare your tank because you have to wait a period before introducing fish into a newly established aquarium.
