i own a repair shop, and not so long ago i had 4 of those things until my wife said they had to go,but two were the 2.2 ,and 2 of the 3.0 engines,on both of them i had to replace the distributor in them, when they go bad that's how they act,i bought a used one from a junk yard, and the 4 cylinder one ran really good, but it would run like crap when it was cold, and if you cut it off it wouldn't start back sometimes,,that may not be whats wrong with yours ,but that's the most common cause for them running like that, either that or a blown head gasket, but it might be something you want to check out, i still got a few parts for one of those around the shop, but they are good cars , i would have liked to have bought a new one,and treated it good id like to see how long one would have lasted, you might also want to try the coil on these they go bad pretty often, good luck,i hope this helps.

Sounds like an injector problem to me or possibly oil fouling.

I would have the injectors cleaned professionally (not by using fuel additives).

When your engine is cold, your engine computer increases the amount of fuel for a cold start and it runs good. Once it warms up, the amount of fuel is reduced by the engine computer VIA the fuel injectors and your engine sounds like it's simply starving for fuel at higher RPM's or when warm and it leans out. This could also be a sensor issue, like an O2 sensor giving a false signal that the mixture is too rich. The O2 sensor could be carbon fouled as well.

If that doesn't fix it, do a compression check - once with the engine cold and again after it's warmed up noting the difference in cylinder pressures. Check the condition of the plugs when you pull them out, looking for carbon or oil deposits. If that looks good, try a leakdown test... If you don't have the tools to do this, then take it to a shop.

If your engine has a lot of miles, it could simply be worn out and due for a rebuild.

You could be looking at ignition or valve timing. That is to say the timing chain or ignition module. Also the possibility of a bad fuel pump or fuel filter. Check fuel pressure if you can. Maybe go to autozone for diagnostic help. Hope this is some kind of help to you.

almost sound,s like you have a good battery, but a sick alternator..............start,s in the morning..[ after the battery had time to replenish it self ]......after it run,s a while [ drain,s the battery ] it won,t start back up.......until it sit,s awhile [ battery build,s itself up...a little ] then it run,s bad in first & 2nd, gear [not enough power left in battery, to keep running right] give it a lot of gas & run,s better [ alternator producing just enough power to run ]..............just for kick,s........have your alternator checked out.
