What you have found and are using is someone else's wireless signal and setup. It is not illegal but it is unethical to use. M ost people don't think twice about using someone elses wireless access.
Here are the things to be cautious about. Make sure you have the Windows Firewall on and a valid and current version of Anti Virus installed and running. If you are accessing their Internet access, it is possible that they can hack your computer while you are connected, if they are knowledgeable.
Last but not least, if they have a virus on their PC, it is possible that the virus can get onto your PC. When you connect to a network or a wireless access, you are essentially parts of a network and files / viruses can spread from one PC to another.
Be careful and protect yourself. What you are doing is a commonly done thing on college campuses and dorms.
When you access someone elses wireless network, they might see a little slow down during their web surfing. You are now sharing their Internet speed and through put.

You are using Chris P's wireless connection. As for legalities, it depends on your State Laws, and whether or not you are using his signal to pass viruses.
Chris P's Wireless is not secure, that is why you are able to use it. But, you are straining his bandwidth, especially if you download large Movie or Music files. This is known as a "Hotspot" as it is not a secured Wireless connection.
It shouldn't mess up your files unless he didn't change the Wireless default password. If he didn't, then your computer will get whatever viruses that are sent to the IP the Wireless has assigned.
Otherwise, it is your decision if you want to use what is called a "Hotspot."

It won't mess up your computer. A LOT of people do it. It's not legal. It's like stealing cable. But the odds of getting caught are pretty slim. The provider company would have to receive a complaint that you were on their access (most users would never even know it). Then they would have to try and find you by tracking your IP address. It's virtually impossible.
