The previous answers are almost correct, but not quite.

xy = 144
x/y = 4 ---> x = 4y

4y(y) = 4y² = 144
4y² = 144 ----> y² = 36 ----> y = ±6, not just 6, because (-6)² = 6² = 36.

So, if y = 6, x = 24. If y = -6, x = -24.

Notice that both of these pairs of numbers satisfy both conditions:

-24/-6 = 4 and (-24)(-6) = 144
24/6 = 4 and (24)(6) = 144

The two numbers are 24 and 6. (Product = 6x24 =144, quotient = 24/6 = 4.)

The dividend is "in mathematical division, the number to be divided by the divisor" ***, that is : 24

(x * y = 144
(x : y = 4

x = 144/y
144/y : y = 4
144/y² = 4
144 = 4y²
y² = 144:4
y² = 36
y = 6

x * y = 144
x * 6 = 144
x = 144:6
x = 24
Solution: (24, 6). The dividend is 24.

xy=144
x/y=4

Multiply the above two equations,
x^2=4(144)

Solve for x,
x=24
