Check out this link from Wikipedia. It pretty much lists many of the most important contributors in the 70's and 80's.

Man, I am a total list-freak...
Trust me... go to www.digitaldreamdoor.com and look at the lists of best thrash/death/black/doom/hardcore metal bands/albums/songs etc
It also offers lists of other music genre's too... but mostly rock/metal

go to www.mmmdi.com there you can browse any genre of music and then again by sub genres and will give you lists of many bands in that genre. I use it all the time for old and rising metal bands.
