The Caspian sea is basically a mix between a sea and a lake. It is too salty to be a lake, but not satly enough to be a sea... Since it is so huge and much much saltier than most lakes it is called a sea.
-It has a salinity of approximately 1.2%, about a third (33%) the salinity of most water from the ocean.
-By comparison, Lake Superior has only 0.06% as much salt as the ocean.

I think it probably has something to do with when it was named which was a looooong time ago. I've been to the Caspian sea (lake) and it's an incredibly interesting place.
