'Internet' - street slang for AOL, Compuserve, WildCat BBB, local bulletin board past city lines, Earthlink, Prodigy Network;;; a network with different computers and hardware: Windows, IBM, Apple, Linux, PS2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Palm, GameBoy DS.
If your at home:
1.Network Interface Card or 10/100 Ethernet Port.
2. Phone Facimile/Modem.
Today its preferred: DSL/Cable due to cost. Per month billing vs. Per minute.
DSL/Cable: DSL Modem with phone line. Cable Cable TV with Cable Internet Modem. The router with wireless is extra, has some security features, than the computer with a stand alone anti-spy/virus ware.

At work:
Internet - local area network in same building or company with multiple buildings, using different computer, printer, phone makers connected to one kind of cabling. Usually Ethernet 10/100-BaseT, Coax, TokenRing, AppleTalk.
Ask the telecommunications department or contractor for a price quote, and recommended hardware.
Submit a list of reasons to justify the cost to management, it might need hiring a part-time staff or extra training for the current persons.

not a whole lot....just a network card if you are connecting to broadband (cable, dsl)

or a modem if you connect through a regular phone line 56k service


Most newer computers will have the network integrated to the motherboard so no need for any add-ons. It'll be an rj-45 port...similar to a phone jack but a little wider head.

Seems like a strange question coming from somebody already connected! LOL
Anyways, you got a few choices there...Dialup (phoneline) DSL (phoneline), Cable (cable modem and cables) are the most common...
