for some reason, my modem wont hand the IP to my router, its like the cable isnt sending any data, its not my computer or anything, and im using factory settings, but my modem wont let my router get to the internet. it works fine when i plug in to the modem directly, but i have 4 other computers who depend on the wireless network, only the linksys router wont connect to the internet, so its kinda useless. any idea on what i should do? i tried usind deferent cables, but nobody can get online if they use the router, wired or wireless. i have no idea what i should do or whare to start

It could be a couple things here, because it's happened to me a few years ago and I've seen it a few times since. One possibility is that your Internet provider has recorded the MAC address of your computer, and of course the Linksys has a different MAC address. You can bring up a command tool on your PC (Start, Run, cmd) and type "ipconfig /all" and write down the hardware address. Then go into the linksys web interface (192.168.1.1) and in the advanced settings that is a MAC address override, or clone feature, where you can give the Linksys the same MAC address as your PC on the Internet interface of the router. You may need to play with other settings as well, such as PPPoE, etc.

Just call your Internet provider and they can/should get you through this. In fact, you might need your ISP involved anyway, because it used to be the "connectoid" on your PC that connected to the DSL service, but now it will be the Linksys router so they might need to reset this for you.

Most new connection problems can be solved by simply shutting down all your appliances - computer modem and router. Restart in this order: Modem (wait a few min.), then router (wait a few min.) then your computer. You will have to go into your setup on your Linksys router to enable wireless connection. (If you have the CD - the easiest way to do this is running the set up on the CD.) Questions? - Is this a new router? Never has been set up before? No password other than the default one?
