First of all, "absolute zero" does not make one "sound stupid"! Used properly, it makes one precise and unambiguous. The term is commonly used in physics and chemistry and has a particular meaning. It could never be properly used to describe weather.
Here are a few synonyms for freezing. Some are quite a stretch.

Freezing varies per substance but the common reference is H2O so
It is not absolute zero (that is almost - 460 F)
but 32 deg F or 0 deg C
