This problem can be solved with basic algebra:
Let width be represented by X
Length = 2x+10
Perimeter = 2*Width +2*Length
= 2(x) + 2(2x+10)
56 = 2x + 4x +20
56-20=6x
36=6x
x=6
Width = 6 in

Hey, don't panic!!!!!!!!
Here's your answer:
Consider the length to be "l", and width to be "w".
From the first line, I get: that the length (l) is ten times more than twice its width (w).
Forming the equation: l = 10 + 2w .................... (Equation A)
It is known that perimeter (p) is the sum of twice the length and width.
Therefore: p = 2 (l+w)
p = 2l + 2w ................................ (Equation B)
So, solving the two equations:
That is substituting the value of (l) from equation (A) in equation (B):
l = 10 + 2w
2 (10 + 2w) + 2w = 56
20 + 6w = 56
6w = 36
w = 6
So the width is 6 inches.
Just in case you want to find out the exact length, then you must substitute the value of (w) in either of the equations.

we can write algebra equations that say the same thing as the word sentences in the problem
l=length of rectangle
w=width of rectangle
L=2w+10 (length of rectangle is 10 more than twice width)
2L+2w=56 (perimiter of rectangle is 56)
with the two equations and two unknowns you can solve several ways, substitution is probably most straight forward
since the first equation tells you what L equals, put that same expression for L, in for L in the other equation:
2(2w+10) + 2w = 56
now we just solve for "w"
4w+20+2w=56
6w=36
w=6
remembering that L=2w+10
L=2(6)+10
L=22
lets check it
2*22+2*6=56
44+12=56
56=56
voila

Width=W
Length=2W+10
2(2W+10)+2W=56
Divide through by 2
(2W+10)+W=28
3W+10=28
3W=18
W=6in

ans is 6
w = a
l = 2a +10
perimeter = 2(2a +10 + a) = 56

L = 2w + 10
2L + 2w = 56
L - 2w = 10
2L + 2w = 56
-----------------
L + 2L = 66
3L = 66
L = 66:3
L = 22
L - 2w = 10
22 - 2w = 10
-2w = 10 - 22
w = -12/-2
w = 6
