When you see a picture of good quality that you like save it as a .jpg file.
Right Click > Save As > Type Picture Name > Select location to save (Put in My Pictures Folder)
Right mouse click desktop (open space)>Properties> Scroll through and choose.
Or when you're on the internet you can just right click or drag to desktop's open space but it won't be saved on your computer.

To change the background of your desktop
1 Place your mouse cursor on a blank portion of your desktop. Click the right mouse button and view Display Properties.
2 In the Pattern or Wallpaper list, click the pattern or wallpaper you want to use.
Notes:
To cover your entire screen with a small wallpaper image, click Tile.
To center a wallpaper image, click Center.
You can use patterns and wallpaper simultaneously. However, if Tile is selected, you will not see the pattern.
If you want more backrounds, you can find alot of backgrounds in the internet.
Good Luck

Right click with your mouse and select properties. Then you go to the desktop tab. You can pick a photo already on your computer to make a background or if you upload photos to your computer you can use one of them to. I have my favorite picture as my background photo.

For my desktop backgrounds, I like either ambient vector-type artwork or natural landscapes, both preferably with a dark color scheme. Why? Simply because it makes it easier to see all the icons on my desktop. :) For web page backgrounds, I normally wouldn't use an image at all. It just makes things harder to read.
