U should test everything. U look at the RAM and if outdated or doesnot work replace it. U then look at the motherboard test it out if dont work replace it. Test the HD make sure it is all free and clean and it is hooked up right. Make sure u set the comp to boot of the hd not the floppy. u then make sure ur ethernet and all those thing s are hooked up and work. U then make sure cd rom works and the floppy works. U want to put windows xp on it load the disk and follow the directions on it u will probably need the windows 98 disk as welll for this. If there is windows 98 on the drive u will n eed to buy maxtor or download it and do that first and then the other one. Your computer should be running try to have a pentium 2-4 or higher and 256 mg of ram

I'd say upgrade the memory first. That's usually the cheapest and easiest upgrade. Then you could upgrade the hard drive, if needed, or the video card, etc. The processor would be more complicated and for the novice user it would be easier just to buy a new computer. To get the most bang for your buck, upgrade the memory.

The first thing that you want to do is to upgrade your RAM. This allows more processes to run without your computer lagging or hanging. Then you want to upgrade your harddrive.

You also may want to upgrade your video card.

Anything after that, you are probably looking at buying a new computer.

It's a endless story with a lot of if & buts. First you can only upgrade your computer to the level it is supported by Hardware. Let's first talk of CPU & Processing. you can not go beyond maximum speed suported by P4 comp if you have a P4. You will have to choose for HT Hyper threading than also you will have to change mother board with a HT suporting Mother board with FSB 800 MHZ & Ram should be of 400 MHZ. You can't upgrade to core2duo.Again the same problem P4 & Core 2 Duo has different CPU Socket. Normally you have PATA HDD where as core 2 duo supporting mother boards support SATA HDD.

Probably the biggest bang for your buck is RAM, then more HD space, if needed. If you're going to do much more than that, you'll probably get more for your money just buying a new PC.

1st I would get a bigger hard drive, then drop a couple 1gb sticks in, then I would start upgrading my hardware...flat screen, wireless keyboard and laser mouse..webcam...4 in 1 printer.
