I'm young (20), and in one way I have fewer experiences than others who are older than me. But in another way, I have seen more of the modern world than they have. My beliefs are based off a world in which my elders are naive because they are sheltered in the warm security of their engrained beliefs, under the blanket of assumption that the standards of morality and standards of rationality are constant.

In my world, and in the hearts of many other young people with me, there is a dismal understanding that the world is rapidly changing and when we try to accept it to the best of our ability we are scolded, or at least ignored, for failing to meet the standards that were set for us.

What do you think?

A lot of the older generation from 45 on up forget that times have changed and will continue to change. They think hard ships they've witnessed was hard, it's become even worse for our generation, like poverty, government policies, crimes, murders, education, etc. Technology has advanced in a time where many people can't afford all the updated gadgets like Cell Phones, Computers, Home Detectors, etc and maintain money for bills. You need to much, but can't get all at once. The party scenes are bigger, prices are higher. Children are witnessing sex or sexual activities at young ages. It's a lot, and this generation will be saying the same thing to the next generation.

I'm 22. I guess I don't have that experience. I guess the older people I know have seen Vietnam, Korea, The Civil Right movement, had their childhood school integrated, in some cases saw WWII, and have a very profound understanding of the humanity of men as well as the evilness of men...

They know better than I about the world, because they have seen so much of it. I don't really know if the world is changing any more rapidly than it ever was. As they say "There is nothing new under the sun," so whatever it is you think the world is changing into, I bet it's not as new as you think it is.

Rationality, wherever it is found, is always welcome.

The difficulty is, of course, that most young people haven't really had a great deal of experience of life. By experience I mean not only having done something, but having lived with the results of having done something long enough to see the significance.

Keep up the good work. Keep learning, and be kind to your elders, they've had a long stuggle.

Good question.

It's not that we don't respect young people's rationality, it's that we respect the old adage "If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything"

Yes, many of us do believe that standards of morality and rationality are constant because we know that this mentality works to be a successful human being in all aspects.

Yes, things change superficially but the core of morality and conscience doesn't. People want them to change to suit each individual agenda.

I reiterate, you must stand for something or you'll fall for anything.

One more thing, I was taught to respect our elders ways, not because they're old but because of what they've been through and survived.

HECK YES!! Try having a few kids and see what the old people tell you about everything you do wrong! "I raised a child Don't tell me not to ......"

My mother in law is so out of touch she only lets my 18 month old eat ONE raisin at a time "wouldn't want her to choke" PLEASE!

Not to mention their disdain for the Internet, ATM cards, cell phones. They even were renting their own phone {does anyone still do that?!?} and had rotary because they didn't want to pay for the touch tone! They at least changed that when I laughed at them! And you can forget about a cell phone! By the way I am 44 and agree with you 100%

My heart goes out to the young 20-25. Trying to make it in this world....Your making your own decisions now and some are wrong.. The elders are probably trying to get threw to you ..that you are making wrong decisions..not all but some young and old are stubborn..so yelling and ignoring takes place from both..young and older....Its hard for elders to See you make the mistakes..And its hard for the younger to be told that they are making one......endless story....
Keep your head up ...do the best you can do ..and learn from your mistakes.. good luck

I am 26, yes older adults are locked into their own generation's view of society. Each generation has their own set of values. For that matter, each person has their own set of values. When you are young you learn from your elders. That way you can change what you feel is wrong. As they say, we are the future.

you sound just like i did when i was your age. the more things change the more they stay the same.
it's a right of passage.
all i can say to you is listen to what they say to you and yes them to death to keep them happy and 40yrs down the road your grandchildren will do the same for you.
you will also come to use those engrained values that they have past down to you so keep and open mind and ear to what advise they have to offer, tuck it away for that rainy day when it will appear and make sense.
