but was no problem really-- and the mechanic told us that it would take a lot labor hours to fix it. Is it possible to get an analog reading of the milage somewhere on the engine without replacing the bulb?

naked is an idiot... Your problem is not a lack of a speedo cable, but you probably knew that.

I believe that you can plug in a scanner and get the mileage out of the ECM at any time. but, you need a scanner...

The dealer can scan the power control module for the current stored mileage on your vehicle.Your instrument cluster can be exchanged for a remanufactured one through the dealer or if you know of the authorized service center they use in your area(dealers do not repair them, they are sent out). And oh,by the way.....GM has not used speedometer cables since the '70's.....it's all electronic....it's not just a bulb, the digital odometer portion of the cluster is faulty.

First of all, God is punishing you for being foolish enough to buy a Pontiac of any kund. Secondly, you could fix the odometer yourself at practically no cost. Go to a junk yard and ask for a cable and they'll tell you how to do it.
