My fish is a fantail and it looks bloated. I think its pregnant, but its half swimming upside down and always stays at the bottom of the fish bowl. It rarely eats. I know its not dead because its still moving and all, but sometimes it stays still for a while. How long does it take to lay eggs?

I had a goldfish that did the same thing and a few days later it died. My father disected it and it's intestines were knotted. This is probably whats wrong with your fish....the next thing that will happen is that it will start swimming upside down and then it will die. Sorry to tell you this, but this happens to fish alot. I suggest you buy a new fish to replace it. If it were pregnant it wouldn't swim upside down.

How big is your goldfish? If it's less than 3" (or less than3 years old, I don't think it would be old enough to lay eggs yet.

How long have you had your fish? Fantails usually have a big abdomen, so I could see how you might think it was full of eggs if you're a new owner, but this is how they look: http://www.jackspets.com/images/LabelPics/Freshwater/73900-Fantail-Goldfish.jpg

The swimming upside down, doesn't sound good, however. Do the scales stick out, making you fish look like a pine cone? This is a condition called dropsy. (see drawing on this chart: http://www.goldfishinfo.com/diagram.htm) Try changing 1/3 of the water in his tank and see if this helps.

If this isn't what he looks like, does he seem like he either weighs too much or is too light and floats? This can be a swim bladder problem. Follow the treatments suggested on this page: http://thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishIllness.html

Good luck with your fish. Next time you might want to post a question like this in the "Fish" category instead of "General Pets" - we get questions like this all the time there!

Well, all of my fish that have swum upside down have died shortly there-after. I hope this is not the case, though. You may be overfeeding your fish, and now he is sick and won't eat. It could possibly be pregnant(and fyi it would be called a twit if it was pregnant. just trivia.) I'm not sure how long it takes to lay eggs, but i would check the water quality of the tank and make sure the temperature isn't abnormal for this type of fish. Also, your fish could possibly be old. If its new, maybe it is not compatible with the type of water it is swimming in. ( salt or fresh water)

My mom has had a lot of pregnant fish before. It usually takes about three week for them to give labor. your fish might feel stressed or threatened by any movements around the fishtank.
